Bennet has been dealing with a lot of spitting up/puking since he was born. Throughout the many weeks, we have tried multiple things to ease his pain. We started him on meds right at 2 weeks, changing the dosage and med several times but to no prevail. In the mix of all of this, we think he has a milk sensitivity as well, so we have also changed from breast milk to several kinds of formula. We think we have the best fit for both med and formula, but for some reason Bean still is uncomfortable and spitty.
We brought him in earlier this week to see what other options we had for him. His dr recommended in having an Upper GI done to see if there were any obstructions or underdeveloped areas. Not something that seemed fun to have done, but it was worth a shot. It's hard to see your babe in pain and there is nothing you can do to help him out.
I brought him into Children's this morning for the appt. I was pretty nervous about the entire procedure, but I knew it would be quick. The nurse called his name and immediately was sweet to both of us. She wanted to hold him right away b/c he was so darn little and had lots of hair. This helped me relax a bit. I got him undressed as she explained that there would be a tube lined with petroleum jelly stuck down his nose and throat. They would then inject 3-4 ounces of barium into his tummy and take multiple x-rays to see how things went down. The main doctor came in and introduced herself (she was also extremely friendly and nice, and probably five years younger than me). But she was very confident and knew what she was doing. She also explained everything to me, reassuring me that it would be quick and painless. I stood behind the glass windows with my own screen as they put the tube down his nose. Bean was not too thrilled about this, but enjoyed the sugar-coated nuk in his mouth. He sneezed a few times from the tube tickling his throat, but otherwise he was a great patient.
Only a few minutes later they were done. The results were in: no major issues, nothing underdeveloped or blocked. He just had really bad reflux. As they were injecting the barium we both could see the bubbles going back up his throat. Poor thing. The only recommendation is to maybe thicken up his formula and give smaller more frequent feedings. Not so sure I want that will happen. Bean likes his food and wants it like clockwork every three hours. We go back in to see his pediatrician on Monday to see what his findings and thoughts are, and if we should change anything. For now, we will just keep him on his normal routine and pray that he will slowly grow out of it as he gets older. Nothing much else we can do. He will be our pukey little boy:)
To look on the bright side, he's gaining weight! He's a healthy 9 lbs and is seven weeks old today! Bean is also not constantly throwing up or having projectile vomits anymore. He still pukes, but it could be worse. We are fixing things, but slowly. Baby steps.
Until then, we wait until Monday.
